Selma, Alabama, March 2, 2024–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Meridium, a leading sustainable infrastructure investment company, today broke ground on an innovative fiber-optic project that will bring broadband access to Alabama’s underserved Black Belt regions. The company will develop, build, finance and manage a high-speed fiber optic network that, when completed, will be able to provide fiber broadband to 53,000 homes and businesses over 300 miles.
Fiber networks are developed and deployed at no cost to local governments and their taxpayers. Yellowhammer Networks, a fiber-to-the-premises network development company owned and financed by Meridiam, is committed to 100% funding the project and will support investments across the region. The total amount he earned amounted to $ 230 million. Yellowhammer also provides strategic, technical and operational support to ensure project success.
Omnipoint will serve as the first ISP partner for the open access network, bringing new high-quality, affordable fiber-optic broadband service to schools, businesses, and homes in Selma, Demopolis, and the Alabama Black Belt. The network will expand to include Bibb, Dallas, Greene, Hale, Marengo, Perry, Sumter and Wilcox counties.
“Meridium is dedicated to closing the gap in critical fiber infrastructure and helping eliminate the disparities that exclude millions of people from the digital world and undermine economic growth for all.” said Nicholas Rubio, CEO of the Americas. “Yellowhammer Networks is determined to ensure that residents in Selma and throughout the region have access to high-speed fiber broadband, regardless of their income level.”
Mayor James Perkins said: “Fast, reliable broadband is no longer a nice-to-have. Today, it’s as important as gas, water and electricity. In an increasingly digital society, we don’t have access to fiber broadband. “Cities are at risk of falling behind.” “It is critical that the City of Selma has access to fiber broadband throughout the city by building the infrastructure, such as utilities, that meets the needs of our residents today and for generations to come.”
