JJ McCarthy took to the field Saturday afternoon at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, working on his latest effort to increase his NFL Draft stock by April.
The former Michigan quarterback, who led the Wolverines to their first national title in decades earlier this year, did not participate in the broad jump, vertical jump or 40-yard dash due to what he called a “hamstring tightness.” Ta. However, he actively participated in on-field training.
He also showed some good looks, including one perfect deep ball.
It wasn’t perfect, but McCarthy often struggled to throw left outside the numbers, and he did the same on Saturday. There seemed to be a huge number of fans watching him in Indianapolis.
McCarthy rushed for a career-high 2,991 yards and 22 touchdowns with just four interceptions for the Wolverines last season. He threw for 221 yards and three touchdowns in overtime against Alabama in the Rose Bowl, then led the Wolverines to a blowout victory over Washington and the program’s first national championship since 1997.
After winning the title, he immediately declared for the NFL draft. It’s unclear where McCarthy will be drafted later this spring, but Yahoo Sports’ Nate Theis has him selected by the Minnesota Vikings with the 11th overall pick in his latest mock draft.
McCarthy is well aware that on paper this year’s draft class has better quarterbacks than him, but Yahoo Sports’ latest mock draft shows Drake Maye, Caleb Williams and Heisman Trophy winner Jaden. McCarthy knows he’s the fourth quarterback after Daniels. He’s the only quarterback to go undefeated and win a national title, and he’s not afraid to lean into it.
“You know, statistics aren’t that important to me. All I really cared about was being the best teammate I could be and being the best quarterback I could be.” It was just going to be,” McCarthy said Friday, via ESPN’s Jeff Legwald. “And the only stat I cared about was the W, and we did pretty well in that category.”
No one knows yet where McCarthy will go in the draft. But until that time comes, McCarthy is doing everything he can to establish himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the country.
“He’s a tough, gritty guy who’s all about winning at the end,” McCarthy said Friday when asked for a scouting report about himself. He “loves the game of football with a burning passion, loves his teammates, and is pretty much everything you want in a starting quarterback.”
