El St-Pierre set a new American record on Saturday.
And this record-breaking run produced the Vermont native’s first record. She is now a world champion.
The 29-year-old from Montgomery won the gold medal at the World Track and Field Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, with a powerful kick on the 3,000 meter bell wrap, defeating two-time world champion Gudav Tsegay.
According to letsrun.com, St-Pierre’s winning time of 8 minutes, 20.87 seconds shattered the previous national record by more than four seconds and ranks him third on the world indoor all-time list. Ethiopia’s Tsegay holds the world record for the 5,000 meter dash.
“It’s definitely really emotional. It’s a dream come true,” St-Pierre told pool reporters. I knew I was going to be competing against some great athletes, and I was confident that it would benefit me. According to letsrun.com, St-Pierre moved into third place before the final lap, completing the final 200 meters in 29.76 seconds and the final 100 meters in 14.69 seconds.
“I kept on pace and I thought, ‘OK, OK, I think I can do a few more laps at this pace as long as it doesn’t get too fast.’ And the next thing I knew, I had 400 more to go. And I was like, “Okay, I’m going to run a fast 400 meters. And I just persisted and, you know, I’m a miler, so I believed in myself.” Pierre said.
St-Pierre gave birth to her son last March and returned to racing a few weeks ago. On February 11, St-Pierre broke the American indoor mile record (4:16.41) at the 2024 Millrose Games. St-Pierre, the 2022 world indoor 3,000m silver medalist, said her Wanamaker Mile win was “for all the moms out there.”

St. Pierre, who grew up on a dairy farm in Montgomery, is a former star athlete at Richford High School and the most decorated athlete in school history at the University of New Hampshire. She became a U.S. Olympian in 2021.
St-Pierre’s son will turn 1 on March 4th.
