Colleagues and friends of Chris Mortensen took to social media to commemorate his life and pay tribute to him after his death at the age of 72.
The longtime NFL insider passed away Sunday morning, his family announced on the longtime professional’s ESPN home.
On NFL Network, Rich Eisen and Daniel Jeremiah tearfully congratulated Mortensen during the NFL Combine broadcast Sunday afternoon.
“I met Chris Mortensen when I was 26 years old. [Mortensen] “He was the GOAT of ESPN, the world leader in sports,” Eisen recalled. “One of the best football writers we’ve ever known.”
Jeremiah added as he fought back tears. “He’s my mentor. He’s one of my best friends…He’s a kind man with a kind family, and I’m thinking about him right now.”
Mortensen took a leave of absence from ESPN in 2016 after being diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer and left Worldwide Leader in September 2023.
Pro Football Hall of Famer and ESPN colleague Peyton Manning posted a tribute to Mortensen on Instagram.
“My heart is broken. We lost a true legend,” Manning wrote. “Mort was the best in the business and I valued our friendship. I trusted him with the announcement of signing with the Broncos and the news of my retirement. I will miss him very much. My thoughts and prayers are with Mickey and his family. Rest in Peace, Malt.”
Mortensen worked very closely with fellow NFL insider Adam Schefter, Anyone joined X.
“It was a truly devastating day,” Schefter posted. “Mort was one of the greatest reporters in the history of sports and an even greater person. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and all who knew and loved him, as do so many. Malt was the best. He will be forever missed and remembered.”
NFL Network Insider Ian Rappaport said: Mention of malt As one of his “growing idols”.
He added: “His contributions to our world will never be matched.”
Jay Glazer, longtime Fox NFL Insider Posted His own compliment.
“Mort… I will always love and appreciate everything I learned from you, every fight we had, every conversation we had. But the most treasured voicemail I ever received is the one I will keep forever. “It was about service from this man!” he said. “I love you brother and I can’t wait for you to drop all kinds of scoops in heaven.”
