Russian warship destroyed in Black Sea, Ukrainian military says
Ukraine’s military claimed on Tuesday that it had destroyed a Russian warship near Crimea, which was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014.
Military spokesman Andriy Yusov said that the “Project 22160” class Russian patrol ship “Sergei Kotov” was damaged in the previous attack on Ukraine, which most likely occurred in September 2023, but the “Magura V5” He said it was destroyed overnight by a naval drone.
Ukrainian military intelligence said the ship suffered “damage to the stern, starboard and port sides” in the Kerch Strait, a narrow waterway that separates Crimea from mainland Russia’s Taman Peninsula and connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov.
“As for the crew, details are being revealed,” Yusov told Ukrainian media. “There are deaths and injuries. However, some of the crew may have been able to evacuate.”
There was no immediate reaction from Russia and the report could not be independently verified.
Andriy Yermak, chief of staff to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said Russia’s Black Sea Fleet was a “symbol of occupation,” adding: “There can’t be a fleet in Crimea in Ukraine.”
Despite not having a large navy, Ukraine has achieved some significant successes in the Black Sea using drones and missiles. Several Russian warships have been sunk or damaged, including the Moscow, the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, which sank just two months after launching a full-scale invasion in February 2022.
In September, Ukraine used British-French-supplied Storm Shadow/Scalp missiles to attack the Black Sea Fleet headquarters in Sevastopol, Crimea, forcing Russian ships to relocate further east.
