The BMW Group’s educational involvement in the golf scene, under the tagline ‘Eagles for Education’, began last year at the company’s headquarters in Munich during the DP World Tour’s BMW International Open . South Africa is also a country with which the BMW Group has had close ties in the golf scene and beyond for more than 50 years.
The luxury carmaker opened its first factory outside Germany in Roslyn, near Johannesburg, from which it has since delivered 1.6 million cars to more than 40 countries. Since its inception, the BMW Group has focused on the subject of STEM education (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and has also been active in South African communities.
That is why South Africa was chosen last year as the starting point for a long-term partnership between the BMW Group and UNICEF*. This is under the slogan “BRIDGE”. “Educating young people for tomorrow and today,” with a focus on STEM education projects. During 2024, the partnership will be expanded to Brazil, India, Mexico and Thailand. These countries have program needs and a BMW Group presence. This partnership contributes to UNICEF’s global goal of reaching 10 million children and young people each year through education.
The BMW Group also has the opportunity to raise funds to support UNICEF’s work in emergencies and protracted crises. The United Nations International Children’s Fund uses these resources to help children develop skills to cope with trauma and provide a safe environment in which to continue learning.
Through nine rounds of golf, contestants can raise money by hitting great golf shots and hitting as many net eagles as possible. The World Finals will be held over three rounds in three categories: Men’s A (up to HCP 12), Men’s B (HCP 13-28) and Ladies (up to HCP 28). In addition to these individual categories, titles are up for grabs in the national team competition as well.
As per tradition, the World Finals will begin on Monday night with a welcome evening and flag parade for all nationalities in attendance. The event concludes on Friday night with a gala dinner and a special guest of honor. South African golf legend Gary Player has won more than 18 major titles, including nine on the Senior Tour, and first became a guest at BMW with his unique golf clinic, famous charisma and legendary fitness.
