In a surprising but politically inconsequential upset on Super Tuesday, President Joe Biden lost the American Samoa Democratic Caucus to entrepreneur Jason Palmer.
On Tuesday night, the local Democratic Party chairman confirmed to ABC News that Mr. Palmer won, despite the small number of votes received, with less than 100 votes between the two candidates.
With 99% of expected votes reported, Mr. Palmer leads with 56% of the vote, followed by Mr. Biden with 44%.
This result marks Biden’s first loss in a nominating election so far. However, since he is expected to face former President Donald Trump again in the general election, his large overall lead will not change much.
So who is Jason Palmer?
According to the candidate’s website, Palmer has previously held executive and leadership positions at multiple organizations including Microsoft, Kaplan Education, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and impact investment firm New Markets Venture Partners. I’m proud of what I did.
Mr. Palmer cited that experience in pitching himself as a “problem solver” during the presidential campaign, pledging to create a new Department of Innovation and Technology.

In an interview with Politico earlier this year, Palmer also noted that Biden and Trump are 81 and 77 years old, and said that Politico reported his age as 52.
“It’s very important that the next president of the United States is someone who really understands young people,” Palmer said.
“We need to pass the torch to a new generation of Americans,” he told Politico, adding that he believes the country’s laws should be updated more frequently than they are now.
In a statement to ABC News Tuesday night, a spokesperson for the Biden campaign dismissed the losses in American Samoa, saying, “This island has unique politics.”
American Samoa does not vote for presidential electors because it is a territory of the United States and not a state. However, the primary caucus will be held.
In 2020, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was the Democratic winner. Trump won the last contested Republican caucus in 2016.
The Republican presidential caucus will meet on Friday.
