Founder of Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) Willie “Prophet” Stigers has joined the Founding Board of Directors of the Neil Lasher Music Fund at Caron Treatment Center, which provides financial assistance to music professionals for drug and alcohol addiction treatment.
With Stiggers’ participation, BMAC and the Foundation will work together to address the stigma of addiction in the Black music world and provide support to community members seeking treatment.
On February 2, Mr. Stigers spoke at the foundation’s annual meeting, Breakfast with the Founders, in which he addressed the stigma surrounding “treatment, mental health, and wellness” in the Black community. “Our goal is to break through that,” he said. “The economy should not be a barrier to whether or not a person can survive or not. [and] Get them the treatment they need. ”
Stigers said he learned about the Neil Lasher Music Fund through his work as a veteran music attorney and member of the BMAC Executive Leadership Council. Dina LaPorte She invited him to attend the 2023 dinner honoring Caron Treatment Center, which provides addiction treatment to individuals receiving grants from the foundation. “When I started doing research and found out that you were funding people in the industry and their families to get treatment, I said, ‘This is unbelievable.’ How can I get involved? Can we do it? How can we spread this message?” Stigers said.
The foundation, in partnership with BMAC, is currently providing “recovery” support spaces for artists at music festivals and venues, as well as planning to hold awareness events in Atlanta this year.
“Unfortunately, seeking help for addiction and mental health issues remains highly stigmatized within the Black community, and BMAC is partnering with the Neil Rusher Music Foundation to help raise awareness, educate and educate the community. , we want to help provide resources,” Laporte said of Stiggers and BMAC’s involvement. in the fund. “In our roles as members of BMAC’s Executive Leadership Council, Prophet and I have long collaborated with music creators and social justice advocacy. I am pleased to help connect Prophet with our founding board. .We are confident that together we can drive important change.”
