VANCOUVER – The City of Vancouver says it cannot provide a complete estimate of the costs associated with hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as two more games will be played than originally anticipated.
Initial costs announced by the state government in late January 2023 pegged the cost of hosting the five World Cup matches at $230 million, much of which would go toward security for the tournament.
However, with the addition of two more games, the city says its original estimate is now outdated.
The city said it was consulting with FIFA, the international soccer governing body, to determine the expected costs and benefits of the additional games, but no date has been set for the information to be released.
The estimate does not include renovations to BC Place, and the stadium’s owner, Crown company PavCo, submitted a request for proposals in December seeking a construction manager to oversee the necessary work.
BC Place, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year, will include more VIP suites and hospitality space on the stadium’s third floor, upgrades to food court concessions and washroom renovations, according to PavCo’s RFP to construction managers. , it has been shown that additional elevators will be required.
The City of Vancouver said in a statement that the additional games are expected to generate additional revenue.
“To update these estimates, we will assess the impact of streaming seven games contrary to current assumptions,” the city said in a statement.
“While we are in the early stages of analyzing the impact of hosting seven matches, we expect to see increased revenue opportunities from commercial partners and match day sales.”
