MADISON — When times are good, they are good.
Hornbacher cheese, made by Michael Speicher of Mountain Dairy Fritzenhaus in Bern, Switzerland, was named best cheese at the World Championship Cheese Contest in Madison. This was Speicher’s third consecutive world championship in which he came out on top. He won his 2020 and his 2022 at the Gourmy Nord Gruyère AOP.
“We are incredibly humbled to be among so many great cheeses, people, and cheese spirits,” said Joe Saronia, Gourmeno’s Americas president. “Many of us in this room are blessed to have a job that we love, and I think we’re all living our best lives here in cheese.”
The contest, sponsored by the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association since 1957, featured 3,302 cheeses, yogurts, butters and dried dairy products in 142 classes. Judges and participants from 25 countries gathered at the Monona Terrace Community & Convention Center for three days of cheese fun.
Wisconsin cheesemakers won in 39 of 142 categories. Two of his companies were among the 20 finalists: Schuman Cheese’s Lake Country Dairy in Turtle Lake and Henning Cheese in Kiel.
