The opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

Technology is advancing at an incredible, almost overwhelming pace. Technology can disrupt industries and pose a real threat to existing businesses. To avoid becoming obsolete or falling behind, entrepreneurs need to be proactive in adopting technology and have a strategy to use it to their advantage.

The challenge is that there seems to be a constant stream of advice and recommendations for entrepreneurs to take advantage of these cutting-edge technologies, but it is unclear what entrepreneurs should do to implement these tools. There are very few concrete explanations. Here are some practical ways entrepreneurs can start embracing new technology today.

1. Stay up to date with new technologies and trends

One of the reasons many small business owners struggle to adopt new technologies is because they have no idea what these technologies do, how they work, and what trends are emerging in the technology industry. Because they haven’t taken the time to actually understand it. As a business leader, it is important that you start collecting information about emerging technologies on a regular basis. This can be as simple as committing to reading one technology article every day or attending technology conferences focused on your industry.

It doesn’t matter if you’re not tech-savvy. You can also ask someone on your team to research and recommend ways to incorporate technology into your business.

2. Implement an off-the-shelf solution first

Too many small business owners and entrepreneurs shy away from innovative solutions. There is a misconception that advanced technology is only available to large companies that can invest billions of dollars in research and development. This might have been true 20 years ago. There are many inexpensive and free technology solutions available to small business owners today.

While there are opportunities to create customized tools and technology platforms, small business owners should always look for off-the-shelf solutions first. Not only are they faster to implement, they have undergone extensive testing and are often backed by a team of technical experts to support your business.

3. Utilize generative AI

Generative AI is a technology that leverages artificial intelligence to create visual and language-based output such as text, music, images, and even entire conversations. Companies like ChatGPT have revolutionized this space and brought this technology to the masses.

Small business owners new to generative AI should focus on two key areas: content creation and customer interaction. AI can easily create content for blogs, marketing materials, and email campaigns without requiring anyone on your team to go through the arduous creative process. Generative AI can also streamline and automate customer interactions through tools like chatbots and automated email responses.

4. Streamline processes and tools through automation

One of the biggest challenges for entrepreneurs is that they have a limited number of resources, working alone or in very small teams. There are only so many hours in a day to complete all tasks. Technology helps streamline workflows, allowing you and your team to accomplish more through automation.

Fortunately, you probably have access to a lot of automation within your existing tools. For example, your CMS may have built-in automation features that your team can take advantage of without implementing a new system.

When introducing automation, it is important to allay employees’ fears that their jobs will be lost. That may be true in some cases, but as an entrepreneur, you can leverage automation to free up your team’s time to work on more valuable tasks, like developing new products or building face-to-face relationships with customers. I can.

5. Focus on data and smart analytics

Data analysis is another area where technology can provide significant benefits. Tools like AI and machine learning (ML) are helping small businesses quickly and efficiently leverage data to identify new opportunities and trends and learn more about their customers, products and services that need improvement, and what’s happening in the market. will help you understand more deeply.

Entrepreneurs should start by evaluating their data collection process. Analytics tools are useless without proper processes to collect data about your customers, their buying habits, and their preferences. Fortunately, many of the tools companies use today collect data. You just need to know where to find and access this information.

With the right processes in place for data collection, companies can leverage tools like Domo and Google Analytics to interpret the data and highlight opportunities.

6. Personalize customer interactions

Consumers no longer want to be treated as numbers. Instead, they want a personalized experience that is unique and built around their needs, preferences, and interests. Small businesses still have a slight advantage over large companies in this regard.

Small businesses should focus on leveraging technology to provide a customized experience for each customer. For example, email marketing tools allow you to segment your contact list and deliver different messages to different audiences. You can take this a step further by providing personalized recommendations and information based on past purchases and actions.

New technologies create unique experiences and ways to interact with brands. It is up to each entrepreneur to decide how to implement technology into their business. We are at a pivotal moment where technology can differentiate businesses and create unprecedented opportunities.
