March 16 (Reuters) – Virginia prosecutors are investigating whether Facebook parent company Meta’s social media platform facilitated and profited from illegal drug sales, The Wall Street Journal said. The paper reported on Saturday, citing documents and people familiar with the matter.
The report said prosecutors sent subpoenas and interrogations last year as part of a criminal grand jury investigation, also requesting records related to drug content and illegal drug sales through Meta’s platform. he added.
The paper added that the Food and Drug Administration is also cooperating with the investigation. He noted that investigations do not necessarily lead to charges of wrongdoing.
“The sale of illegal drugs is against our policy and we work hard to identify and remove this content from our services,” the newspaper quoted a Meta spokesperson as saying in a statement.
“Meth actively cooperates with law enforcement to combat the sale and distribution of illegal drugs,” he added.
Spokespeople for prosecutors and the FDA declined to comment to the Journal.
