Rick Nash was named general manager of the Canadian men’s team for the 2024 IIHF World Championship on Tuesday.
The 39-year-old Brampton, Ontario native joined the Columbus Blue Jackets as assistant general manager on June 13, 2019 and is in his third season as director of player development.
The competition will be held from May 10th to May 26th in Prague and Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Nash was Canada’s assistant GM when the team finished second at the 2022 World Championship. Before he served as director of player development in Columbus, he served as the team’s special assistant to the GM from 2019-21.
Drafted No. 1 by Columbus in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Nash played in 1,060 games with the Blue Jackets, New York Rangers, and Boston Bruins, scoring 805 points (437 goals, 368 assists). He scored 46 points (18 goals, 28 assists) in 89 Stanley Cup Playoff games, helping the Rangers reach the Cup Final in 2014, where they lost to the Los Angeles Kings in five games.
He represented Canada at the 2006 (Turin), 2010 (Vancouver) and 2014 (Sochi) Olympics, winning gold medals in 2010 and 2014. He also competed in the World Championships, winning gold in 2007 and finishing runner-up twice (2005, 2008). ). He helped Canada to a runner-up finish at the 2002 IIHF World Junior Championship.
Canada will play Great Britain on May 11 in the opening game of this year’s world championship. They will also face Denmark, Austria, Norway, Finland and Switzerland in the qualifying rounds, before facing hosts Czech Republic in the medal games on May 26 before the tournament concludes.
Canada will play pre-tournament games against Austria on May 5th at the Steffl Arena in Vienna and against Hungary on May 7th at the MVM Dome in Budapest.
