Report of the Secretary-General on the Peacebuilding Fund

In 2023, the Peacebuilding Fund approved $202,485,203 in assistance to 36 countries and territories. Across the three priorities of the Fund’s 2020-2024 Strategy, $24,726,031 was approved to support transboundary and regional approaches, $38,349,022 to accelerate transitions, and $57,058,903 to empower women and youth. Overall, support was significantly lower than demand and below target levels due to reduced funding. Thirty-six donor partners generously contributed his $131.8 million to the fund, but contributions were well below his $330 million goal and a 22% decrease compared to 2022. The Fund reached its lowest liquidity level due to increased demand from Member States despite a decrease in contributions. Since its founding. However, the General Assembly’s decision to provide assessed contributions to the Peacebuilding Fund from 2025 is a landmark decision that will bring more predictable and sustainable resources, while also ensuring that peacebuilding becomes an important part of UN operations. It emphasizes that it is the core. All member states are committed to investment. At the same time, increased voluntary funding is essential to implement the proposals contained in the policy brief on the New Agenda for Peace.
