The annual summit will be held on Saturday, March 23rd from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at ISEC on Northeastern University’s Boston campus.
When Charlotte Pick first attended a Women’s Interdisciplinary Entrepreneurship Association event at Northeastern University as a freshman, she didn’t have a business idea.
“I wanted to explore the field and see if it would be the right place for me,” says Pick, who is currently a fourth-year student studying business and design.
WISE is a student-led group that brings together women and underrepresented individuals to encourage entrepreneurship in all fields and industries.
No previous business experience is required.
“Ultimately, I realized that entrepreneurship is much more than just starting your own business,” Pick says. Mr. Pick officially joined the WISE team in 2022 as Design Coordinator and currently leads the team organizing the 2024 WISE Summit.
WISE’s largest event of the year, the annual summit, will be held on Saturday, March 23 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex on Northeastern University’s Boston campus.
The day will feature speeches, workshops, lightning talks and panel discussions from entrepreneurs, experts and leaders.
Pre-registration is now closed, but walk-ins are also welcome. Ticket price is $40.
Diane Nishigaya-McGillivray, senior vice president for advancement at Northeastern University, said WISE offers a supportive community that is not competitive in nature.
“The students themselves are the driving force behind this, and I love watching those who attend WISE grow not just as entrepreneurs, but as people, as leaders, as people who have an impact and care about the experiences of others. was phenomenal,” McGillivray said.
Pick said the summit’s main purpose is to foster community and introduce women and underrepresented populations to entrepreneurship and WISE’s innovative thinking.
The summit will highlight the many paths entrepreneurs may take, some of them unconventional. Some participants, like Pick, may realize that they can participate even if they don’t already have their own business.
“Learn how to integrate into the community, network with others here, learn from incredibly inspiring speakers, launch your own venture, and gain confidence in whatever field you are in. This is your chance to develop the skills you need to get started.” Pick says.
The theme of this year’s summit is “Embracing the Authentic.” Pick says it means understanding that everyone can bring something special to an organization or project.
Keynote speakers include Lisa Sun of the clothing brand Gravitas, Yasmin Cruz Ferrin of the venture capital firm Visible Hands, and award-winning chef and entrepreneur Eileen Xiang Li.
“We have made diversity our main focus this year, making sure that everyone we come into contact with has diverse perspectives, and ensuring that attendees see themselves on stage and that these people We wanted to be able to draw inspiration from what they were doing,” Pick said. Say.
Sun is the founder and CEO of Gravitas, which offers clothing for all shapes and sizes. She is also the author of a book of the same name.
Ferrine Cruz is a general partner and co-founder of Visible Hands, which funds and helps underrepresented founders launch their own startups.
Lee is a James Beard Award-winning chef, restaurant industry leader, and co-founder of Mei Mei Restaurant Group. She also co-founded her Prepshift, a food business consulting and training company.
Workshops will cover topics such as personal finance and wealth building, balancing career and side hustles, building a brand in a taboo industry, and strengthening your mental health for success.
WISE was founded in 2018 by students Eliana Berger and Mia Nguyen. The organization is affiliated with Mosaic, Northeastern University’s student-led entrepreneurial organization.
WISE has created a support system that helps women and underrepresented people not only join entrepreneurial organizations in the Northeast, but also advance to leadership positions within them, McGillivray said.
“Since WISE was founded, the number of women advancing to the finals of the Husky Startup Challenge has increased dramatically,” she says.
A team of about 30 students runs WISE. WISE includes approximately 1,200 members and is open to students from all of Northeastern’s global campuses, including London and Oakland, California.
In addition to WeLearn workshops that are open to the public, WISE also offers three application-based programs for undergraduate students: WeSupport, WeBuild, and WeLaunch. Pick said about 500 students take the program each semester.
