Planet Fitness reported this week that its stock valuation has fallen after a gym in Alaska revoked the membership of a woman who took photos of men using the women’s locker room.
The company’s stock traded at a monthly high of $66.92 on March 7, before plummeting to a low of $56.46 on Tuesday.
This price drop followed an incident in which Patricia Silva encountered a man shaving in the women’s locker room.
She also claimed in a video posted on Facebook: “There was a little girl sitting in the corner. She might have been 12 years old…she had a towel over her head and was kind of freaking out.”
“I took a picture of him because I was offended,” she said in the video.
Silva added that the man had shaved his face and told her he was “queer.”
Silva said after he complained to management, his membership was revoked for violating rules that prohibit him from taking photos of other gym users.
Gym policy allows members to use the locker room that corresponds to their gender identity.
“Our gender identity non-discrimination policy provides that members and guests have access to facilities that best match their honest self-reported gender identity,” the gym said in a statement.
However, this policy is not a blanket recommendation for people to claim a gender other than their own and enter the locker room of their choice.
The company said, “If it is confirmed that a member is maliciously and unfairly asserting their gender identity, they may be asked to resign and their membership status may be revoked.”
In 2015, Yvette Cormier, a Michigan woman, sued Planet Fitness, claiming her membership was wrongly terminated after she filed a complaint about a transgender woman.
A Michigan judge ultimately ruled against Cormier.
