After spending 15 years in the business world, Phoenix resident Lindsey Kirsch decided to take a chance on herself and started her own business in the Valley.
Kirsch, who immigrated to the United States from Canada in 2016, started her career at a boutique public relations agency in Seattle before moving to McDonald’s. There, she oversaw all field public relations efforts in the Pacific Northwest, Rocky Mountains and Midwest.
The end goal was always to establish her own agency.
“I realized the importance of spending time in the corporate world and learning from senior executives and seasoned industry professionals,” said Kirsch, founder and chief public relations strategist at Slayer Public Relations in Phoenix. Ta. “From the beginning of my career, my aim was to gain as much experience as possible and ultimately apply it to running a successful PR company.”
After working at McDonald’s for more than six years, corporate employees were informed that the company would be restructured. Many employees were laid off.
“We knew it was coming. My team and many other corporate roles were eliminated, but this was a sign to me that now was the time to do it.” said Kirsch. “I prepared well in advance and considered my options, and for me it was one thing: pursue my dream of starting an independent PR company. The day my team was laid off, That was the day I founded this LLC. The opportunity came naturally and I knew if I didn’t take advantage of it, I never would.”
Slayer Public Relations opened in April 2023 in downtown Phoenix.
If you change your path on your own, there will be a lot of things you don’t understand. Your health insurance, 401K, and other company benefits will no longer be secure.
“I was worried, ‘How do I get customers?’ How do I promote Slayer’s PR? How can I differentiate myself from my competitors? What’s the approach? All those things went through my mind, but I went for it,” Karsh explained. “Many of us are guided by fear, but I chose to fight it and take control…Where there is risk, there is also reward. Think about it… Do you feel like you’ve missed out on opportunities because of fear of the unknown?”
Kirsch said it’s a matter of mindset. She encourages everyone to take a hard look at her self-limiting beliefs and ask themselves how rational those fears really are. Do you have enough confidence in yourself?
In honor of Women’s History Month, Kirsch points out how important it is to remember how far we’ve come.
“Women need to remember that they can be bold and fearless. That applies whether they work for a company or on their own. As women, we have to instill that in ourselves. I think it’s important to find out,” Kirsch said. “There are more and more women in leadership positions within companies. Statistically, there are not as many women entrepreneurs as there are men, but I believe that change is happening.
“I want to encourage women to remember who they are, what their values are and to always be bold, fearless and brave. Be true to yourself. Don’t let anyone throw you off course, disrespect you, or make you feel inferior.”
A die-hard fan of ’90s grunge music, Kirsch spends much of his free time in record stores, growing his collection. Her name Slayer was inspired by her love of music and her fearless nature.
“I’ve always loved this name, it’s bold and memorable,” she said. “It’s a departure from traditional agency names. It’s bold, fearless, and edgy.”
The agency’s two main focuses are food and beverages, and Slayer’s tagline is “Better than the rest.” The meaning is twofold.
“One of the things that sets us apart in terms of a restaurant and one of the things that sets us apart is that we stand out as an independent, female-led agency,” Kirsch said. “Just like our brand and our team, it’s bold and powerful. That’s the key message here: be bold, be fearless, and have the right mindset. But at the same time, be bold and be fearless and have the right mindset.” It’s also important to be kind.
“If you feel scared or start to doubt yourself professionally or personally, don’t beat yourself up. Take the leap,” Kirsch added.
It’s been almost a year since Slayer PR opened in Phoenix.
“I always go back to the adage that with risk comes reward… but to make that happen, you have to overcome your own limiting beliefs. Remind yourself every day that you have no other choice. Please. We pretend that no other option exists because that’s what limits us,” Kirsch said. “If you really want to be successful, there is no choice.”
