WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) – Watertown officials are reminding businesses to prepare for an expected surge in tourists for next month’s solar eclipse.
Although the eclipse only lasts a few minutes, visitors are there all day long. Hotel rooms and short-term rentals are fully booked and businesses are bracing for a big rush. Restaurants like Jean’s Beans are gearing up for hungry guests.
Jeans Beans manager Heather Williams said: “We’re pre-ordering to make sure we have it in stock, and we’re going to have a full staff and be busy that weekend.”
Some businesses are changing their hours to accommodate the busiest times on weekends and on the day of the eclipse.
“We’re going to be playing by ear over the weekend. We’re open, but as far as hours go, we’re definitely open during the eclipse,” Williams said.
As businesses across Watertown prepare for the big day, Mayor Sarah Pierce took time during Thursday’s press conference to share some advice for businesses.
“The main message is to be careful and be prepared. If you’re a business that caters to visitors, please stay open,” she said.
Mayor Pierce said stocking up on products is something businesses should consider. She further says she might consider hiring additional staff to help educate employees about the eclipse to answer questions from visitors.
“If you open on a day you would normally be closed, please change your Google status so people have accurate information,” she said.
Shipping is also an area of concern. Businesses scheduled to make deliveries on April 8 may want to consider changing the date due to expected traffic congestion, Pearce said. And if your business isn’t ready to accommodate Eclipse visitors, consider closing for the day, reducing your business hours, or encouraging employees to work from home, Pearce said.
“The goal is to share the eclipse as a positive experience and make people want to return to the area,” she said.
And Pearce says it’s a team effort.
