The Carolinas are getting a boost with new investment from Duke Energy to build more solar farms.
Duke Energy announced Friday that it wants to build a major facility, the Robinson Solar Center, near a nuclear power plant that would add solar power to Chesterfield and Darlington counties.
“Making smart investments in South Carolina’s energy future is a priority for Duke Energy, and we are committed to providing reliable, affordable service to the customers and communities we serve every day. “We are focused on cleaner energy options and the transition to a low-carbon future,” he said. Mike Callahan, Duke Energy South Carolina president; “The proposed Robinson Solar Center is part of a multi-thousand megawatt solar facility that will help make that happen.”
If the project is approved by the South Carolina Public Service Commission, construction is expected to begin in 2026 and provide fuel-free energy by 2027.

The project will also create more than 200 new construction jobs.
South Carolina had the fastest growing population in the nation in 2023, according to the Census Bureau. Duke Energy says growing energy demand requires a diverse mix of resources.
“We are taking an ‘all of the above’ approach, incorporating renewable energy such as solar power, next-generation and existing nuclear, natural gas and hydroelectric power,” Callahan said.
