Powder Baby Dry Shampoo, a student startup from Brigham Young University that sells healthy, non-aerosol dry shampoo in five colors, won the $30,000 Simon Gibson Grand Prize at the university’s final awards and showcase event in 2024. Won first place in the 2018 Utah Entrepreneur Challenge. Utah today.
The statewide business model competition is administered by the Lassonde Entrepreneurial Institute, an interdisciplinary division of the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business, and sponsored by Zions Bank. The final event saw Utah’s best collegiate entrepreneurs compete for more than $100,000 in cash and prizes.
Kylie Black, developer and founder of Powder Baby Dry Shampoo, was grateful to win the Grand Prize and excited about what the money will help her achieve in the near future.
“When they call my name and I win the grand prize, it means a lot to me because we need this money to promote this summer,” Black said. “We need this grant to really continue to grow. We have the best product. We just need to get it in front of people and this competition is It gives us the legs to do it.”
The idea for Powder Baby Dry Shampoo came from my experience with other products.
“I really chose it because I really hated dry shampoo,” Ms. Black said. “It took us about a year to come up with the right bottle and the right materials. You can now find us on our website. We also sell on Amazon.”
Other top winners from the Utah Entrepreneur Challenge final event include: His team from Brigham Young University and the University of Utah, Spot Parking, which automates and streamlines parking enforcement, took third place and won $7,500. Experts with expertise in a variety of industries judged student startup teams through multiple competition rounds. The top teams advanced to a final event where they pitched their ideas in person and participated in a public showcase at the University of Utah.
“This year’s Utah Entrepreneur Challenge brought together an incredible group of student entrepreneurs from across the state,” said Anne Bastien, program director for the Lassonde Entrepreneurial Institute. “This contest allows these teams to compete for cash and prizes, while also giving them a great opportunity to practice pitching themselves and make great connections that will help them build their companies. I look forward to seeing what our teams and individuals accomplish in the coming years.”
