Southwest Airlines falls into darkness.
Ryan Green, the company’s chief commercial officer, told attendees at an air travel conference last week that the company plans to begin its first-ever red-eye flights within the next two weeks. washington post report.
Green said he estimates the airline could deploy up to 50 redeye flights a day, adding that the airline is still ironing out schedule technicalities and related labor decisions before starting late-night sailings. He pointed out that it is under consideration.

“We have to be absolutely focused on increasing efficiency,” Green told the paper, explaining that the airline wants to increase its frequency without “increasing its cost structure.” .
Dallas-based Southwest Airlines has major hubs in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Phoenix, making red-eye flight options attractive for passengers flying to and from these western U.S. cities.
Red-eye flights are especially popular for cross-country travel, where the time zone change gives passengers the opportunity to depart immediately upon landing.
Southwest Airlines posted a net loss of $219 million in the fourth quarter of 2023, but still managed to break company records with operating revenue of $6.8 billion for the same period.

We will relentlessly execute on our plan to drive financial results while delivering stronger and more efficient operations.”
Boeing’s problems led Southwest Airlines to acquire fewer Boeing 737 Max aircraft.
Southwest was down just under 6% from a year ago as of Monday afternoon.
