Nonprofit organizations are the backbone of our communities, but despite the good work they do, few receive the recognition or funding they deserve. That’s where the foundation comes in.
“It’s incredible to see something like this happen because nothing like this has ever happened in Oklahoma,” said Brittany Carter-Thomas of Flourish OKC.
A group of community leaders in Northeast Oklahoma City have been selected to help other nonprofits build their dreams through a generous grant program. “There were 151 applicants and in the end he had to narrow it down to 16, and he donated $300,000,” Carter-Thomas said.
Each organization applied for the amount needed depending on the specific needs of the program. “Our overall goal is just to alleviate health disparities in Northeast Oklahoma City,” said Elysia Pollard of Clara Community Healthcare Clinic.
The free clinic is located at 2224 North Cate Avenue in northeast Oklahoma City. “We provide medical services to people who are uninsured or underinsured,” Pollard said.
This grant will not only allow us to hire more people, but also help more people. “Right now we’re not open every day because we don’t have staff, but this will allow us to hire staff and open our doors more during the week,” Pollard said.
Felix Reeden has been named Oklahoma City Public Schools Teacher of the Year, but his teaching doesn’t end when the school year ends. “We’re going to teach them lawn care. We’re going to teach them how to maintain their lawns and other people’s lawns and go out and market their skills to churches and neighborhoods. ” said Felix Linden of KAYSI – Kids At Your Service Inc.
Lisa Hill uses a hybrid teaching method to homeschool her six children and it has proven effective, so she plans to start school in the fall using the same method. “This will allow us to pay our teachers well and hire qualified teachers,” said Hill Academy founder Lisa Hill.
While the winners were now recognized, the luncheon became a meeting to reflect on how we can all work together to make Northeast Oklahoma City better. “When you look at a room like this today, it’s just amazing,” Carter-Thomas said.
“I am truly grateful to be a recipient of the DUO Fund,” Hill said.
