Seattle – Small business owners in downtown Seattle are gearing up for a busy weekend. There’s a Seahawks game at Lumen Field on New Year’s Eve and his NHL Winter Classic at T-Mobile Park on New Year’s Day.
Business owners told FOX 13 it’s an exciting time. The arrival of sports fans means 2024 will start with a buzz of Pioneer Square and his SODO bars and restaurants. These two events alone are expected to draw large crowds to the area.
Many businesses are planning to extend their hours or hire additional staff to accommodate the thousands of fans expected in that part of town. The Winter Classic is new this year, so we’re excited to welcome Hockey fans to his SODO.
At Bad Bishop, Jesse Spring will be serving up signature Bloody Marys and cold brew cocktails during the long holiday weekend. He said the bar is adding staff not only to help with the 2024 ring, but also to serve the sports fans who flock to the outdoor Winter Classic against the Seahawks and Kraken.
“We have several events planned for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day,” Spring said. “Having events like this always brings people back to the neighborhood.”
“I’m looking forward to the weekend. It’s going to be long, but it’s going to be fun,” said Farshid Baramini, owner of Gantry Public House.
Varamini is also gearing up for a busy weekend by opening the bar on Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings.
“Obviously the Seahawks will keep their playoff hopes alive on Sunday and not disappoint. The Kraken will play the Las Vegas Golden Knights on New Year’s Day in the Winter Classic on Monday,” Balamini said.
“Lower Queen Anne and Uptown get a lot of love for Kraken games, but having an NHL game in our neighborhood is a huge deal,” said Pioneer Square Alliance. Community Development Director Chris Woodward said.
Woodward said new and existing businesses are contributing to the revitalization of Pioneer Square. He says this weekend’s sporting event at SODO will be a big boost for them.
“Every game loses thousands of people and it costs thousands of dollars in the pockets of the executives,” Woodward said.
This weekend’s game will be a big opportunity for new and old customers to visit these businesses.
“You always get a chance for people to see how much this area has grown since then. I mean, over 30 businesses opened here last year. And for people to see how much it’s grown. It’s a blessing that the neighborhood has grown every time we have an event that brings people together,” Spring said.
There’s also a lot of development happening on the nearby waterfront, with beach additions and other businesses moving into the area, according to the Pioneer Square Alliance.
“Groups like DSA are revitalizing Occidental Square, revitalizing city parks and recreation, and revitalizing Pioneer Park,” Woodward said. “The important thing to note is how the waterfront is changing now and what it will look like in a few years. There are beaches nearby that will open now, and Molly Moons along the waterfront. We’re going to open.’ There’s a lot more happening right now, and there’s going to be a lot more happening soon.” ”
