Lee Corso has worn many hats and mascot heads throughout his unique life of 88 years. That includes her mysterious TV character and her current role as the business director of an apparently quite famous pencil company.
GQ Sports” Alex Kirshner recently gave college football fans a great insight when he published a feature article about two of College GameDay’s most important members, Corso and Kirk Herbstreit, and the long-term relationship they have developed. I gave you a Christmas present.
The piece is very moving, detailing how the young upstart Herbstreit found the perfect mentor in Corso. Meanwhile, Herbstreit is now Corso’s guardian angel on set, as he helps get Corso’s point across on air while keeping his older friend from going too off-topic. The relationship has come full circle. Herbstreit said Lee Corso became like a second father to her, even providing some kind of moral support, even though her own father was struggling.
However, if you don’t read the entire story, you might miss the seemingly random paragraphs it contains. In the middle of the article, it is stated that Lee Corso actually has a second job.
“game day It’s not Corso’s only job: He is also the business development director for the pencil company Dixon Ticonderoga,” GQ writes. “It’s not just a ceremonial role; the Corso has a literal pencil-pusher job.”
What on earth is that? Lee Corso, who wears a mascot head and screams with his head flying every Saturday, also helps run the company that manufactures No. 2 pencils? While this may be hard to believe, Corso’s own profile on the ESPN Press Room website also mentions his role with Dixon Ticonderoga.
“Mr. Corso is Director of Business Development for Dixon Ticonderoga in Heathrow, Florida. Dixon Ticonderoga is an international, diversified manufacturer and distributor of writing instruments and art supplies.”
Its office is in the Orlando area, across Interstate 4 from Lake Mary, where Corso’s home is located. So getting to Dixon Ticonderoga’s office doesn’t seem to require the same travel as other gigs.
But don’t think that this is Corso’s real job. Because he knows he’s an entertainer first and foremost.
“lover, loverRemember: We’re in the entertainment business, and soccer is our vehicle,” Corso said, according to the GQ article. He also showed up on Saturday’s edition of his GameDay with his No. 2 pencil.
