LIVINGSTON COUNTY — Dozens of new eateries and shops are starting their stories in 2023 in Livingston County. Many people shared their hopes, dreams, fears and challenges with The Daily throughout the year.

The Daily also shared its disappointment when a beloved business closed its doors.

Here’s a look at some of the stores and restaurants we’ve gained and lost in 2023.

At least two stores with philanthropic causes have opened this year. Heartland coffee shop Thread Creek Coffee uses 100% of its profits, excluding labor and expenses, to fund Border Patrol efforts to stop the trafficking of thousands of girls and women in other parts of the world doing. Brighton boutique Forest and Philly’s is home to the Kodiwomple Foundation, a new organization that provides grants to cover out-of-pocket costs and out-of-pocket costs for mental health treatment.

The historic Rolison Building is fully occupied this year with three tenants. A longtime antique shop owner in Northville, he opened A Gathered Collection to sell antiques, upcycled and repurposed furniture, and custom signs. His intimate clothing shop Hush has relocated from another location in downtown Brighton, and Dawn Angelic Photography has opened a studio in the back. This year also marks the first time John Kudler has had a chance to see the changes to the building that housed his family’s hardware store, Rolison Pro Hardware, for several generations before he suffered a stroke.

Brighton has acquired several eateries in 2023. The highly anticipated Reserve Steakhouse brought an upscale atmosphere. The Canopy Lounge is now open with exotic hunting mounts. Four Circles Brewery offers unique beers on tap. Label Kitchen and Bar has renovated Stout’s Irish Pub. The 120 West opened above the sidecar slider bar. The state’s first Everbowl store has opened downtown. Hummus Hut, a new Middle Eastern concept eatery, has opened inside PokeFresh. Sahara Middle Eastern Grill was open and for sale.

Brighton has said goodbye to the Big Boy and Detroit Wing Co. locations where MSU Federal Credit Union will soon be built. The owners of Ginopolis bar BQ Smokehouse briefly rebranded it as Cowgirls County Bar & Grill, but have closed in the midst of streetscapes. Lefty’s Cheesesteak location also closed, but Brighton replaced him with a Wing Snob chicken restaurant.

Meanwhile, in downtown retail, Rosie’s Boutique closed and was replaced by Coast on Main, a marine clothing store. Coral Sash Boutique opened in the former Beverly Ray’s storefront after the longtime owner decided to retire. Finders Keepers, a pallet-based resale shop, has also opened in neighboring Brighton Township.

Howell has gained new independently owned shops and eateries this year. Sports card collectors can visit JD’s Sports Cards, a new card shop located downtown. If you like card games and board games, Mom’s Basement Games has a ton of them. Galaxy Records is now filled with vinyl records, a wall of Blu-rays and DVDs, and some CDs and video games after the owners pivoted from operating a virtual reality arcade in the space.

Howell also acquired a new boutique, Betty James Pretty Things, a new consignment store, The Garment District Resale, and the wildly popular artisan bakery, Oh Crumbs. — Also includes Griff’s Grill, a new eatery specializing in sliders, Italian delicatessen and sandwich shop The Crunchy Pickle (not to be confused with Copper Pickles, which was once popular in town), and Shaka His Cafe, which serves Hawaiian “superfruits” I will join. bowl.

The new Pittaway has opened on the north side of town, and the long-awaited Panda Express has been completed in neighboring Genoa Township.

Downtown Howell has said goodbye to spirituality and gift shop Kokopelli’s Corner. Black Iron Coffee Roasters recently announced that it is closing its doors, but plans to sell ownership. In a recent update on social media, the company wrote that it is developing a purchase agreement and could have a grand opening as early as January.

Heartland wasn’t without other updates in 2023 as well. Another addition to Heartland Township is Dealz Dealz, a former laundromat turned discount retailer. Heartland also acquired Smoothie King and Planet Fitness. The owners of Heartland Big Boy have decided to retire, closing the last Big Boy in the county after more than 40 years.

Meanwhile, Pinckney said goodbye to two eateries but gained a specialty restaurant. The village welcomed Earth’s Energy, which sells specialty coffee, crystals, rocks, fossils and gifts. Go Taco has closed, and the owner of Fondness has closed his Asian fusion restaurant to focus on his Court of the Dragon restaurant in the city of Hamburg.

A local barbecue restaurateur has opened a second location in Hell, Smoke Doctor 2. Smoke Doctor 2 is located in the former Hell Hole Diner and Bar. A historic building in Fowlerville is living a new chapter as Good Dee’s Coffee Bar, filling the vacancy left when Ville’s Grill closed in 2020.

Several stores have opened at Tanger Outlet Mall in Howell Township. G&G’s Sweet Treats sells freeze-dried candies and other products. Tools for Veterans celebrated its grand opening after significantly expanding its operations. The larger store features hunting and fishing equipment, an expanded antique tool area, and specialty furniture items made by veterans.

The outlet mall also saw the return of Adidas and added LA7 women’s clothing store and All Star Elite sportswear store.

Green Oak Village Place filled some stores in 2023; It includes a new X-Golf simulator venue and a “bubble tea” cafe, Boba Bare Craft Tea, as well as a second Sola salon. The new Texas Roadhouse was built on the site of the demolished TGI Fridays.

Two discount retailers are expanding into new locations in Livingston County this year. They include a new Dollar Tree at the former Pier 1 at Green Oak Village Place and a new Dollar General at the former CVS at Latson Road and M-59 in Osceola Township.
