As a child, Dr. Willard Wiggan was told by his teachers that he was good for nothing, but now he is a well-known micro-artist known for his minute handmade creations.
MBE Dr Willard Wigan has made a name for himself as ‘the world’s greatest micro-artist’ with his extraordinary works invisible to the naked eye.
His intricate art can only be properly seen through a microscope and is so small that it can be seen inside the eye of a needle, on the head of a pin, and even on a human eyelash.
Wigan has achieved two world records for the smallest handmade sculpture. His first record, back in 2013, was a tiny 24-carat gold bike. He then broke his own record in 2017 by sculpting a human fetus from carpet fibers. According to Guinness World Records, the sculpture is 0.05388 millimeters (53.88 microns) wide and was placed inside a hollowed-out section of Wigan’s own beard.
Examples of his amazing works include a church carved from a grain of sand and a replica of the Mona Lisa smaller than a match head.
Working at such a microscopic level is not without its challenges.
“Sometimes I find myself in an unpleasant situation where a fly flies under the microscope and my sculpture may be blown away by the wind from the fly’s wings,” Wiggan says.
“My artwork drives me crazy,” he admits. “But the glory is when I complete it and others see it.”
creative process
To achieve this small art, Wigan spent years honing his skills and techniques.
He became known worldwide due to his talent. The late Queen Elizabeth II acquired her one of her creations, which featured a miniature model of her own crown on the head of her 2mm pin.
“I work between heartbeats,” Wiggan explains. “I can feel my heart beating, so I wait for it to stop, and then I do some training in between. It’s just breathing exercises.”
However, this intensive production process can be long and difficult. Wigan said creating a sculpture can take him up to 16 to 17 hours a day for weeks.
“My autism allows me to exhibit extreme behaviors that I use as fuel. I wouldn’t be where I am today without this disease.” Wigan says.
