ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Local activists are taking another step toward buying RG&E.
Metro Justice, the group behind the effort, is promoting a study to determine whether it is possible to transform RG&E into a public utility rather than a private utility. The idea comes after years of complaints from activists and customers about billing issues and issues. poor customer service.
Rochester City Council approved $500,000 to support the study last June. County lawmakers then rejected a proposal to commit $1 million to make it happen.
Metro Justice leaders say it’s past time for county leaders to do their part.
“Don’t we all deserve a comprehensive, independent investigation conducted by real experts so we can make informed choices about our power companies?” Director, Metro Justice Organization Mohini Sharma said:
“We firmly oppose government-controlled RG&E power,” said IBEW Local Union 36 President Jeff Sondervan. “We represent 377 local workers here at RG&E who keep the lights on and the gas flowing and are not afraid of investigation, but what we know is that , that government-controlled electricity is bad for workers. It’s bad for communities.”
Monroe County Executive Adam Bello previously expressed concerns about the proposed study. He doesn’t intend to veto it, but he says that’s not how public money should be spent.
