The secretary of the Department of Human Resources said Alabama did not accept funding for the summer meal program because it was too late to request funding in the budget.
Alabama is one of 15 states not participating in the program. Secretary Nancy Buckner said Thursday at the department’s board of directors that some states, led by Republicans, have cited opposition to “welfare” in denying federal funds. He said that this was not because he was “politically opposed to it.”
“I told (Governor Kay Ivey) we can’t do that,” Buckner said. “We don’t have the money to pay for that administration, and (Alabama State Police Superintendent Eric) McKee told me he doesn’t have the money to do his part.”
