After 10 days of intense competition at the 2024 World Junior Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden, all three countries with potential players for the Las Vegas Golden Knights have advanced to the medal games. Matias Sapovalev and the Czech Republic will play Artu Karki and Finland for the bronze medal at 6 a.m. PT on Friday, while David Edström and Sweden will play for the gold medal at 10:30 a.m. PT. 30 minutes) will play against the United States national team. Named alternate captain of Team Czech at the start of his third World Juniors, Sapovalev made the most of his ‘A’ status. Kalki and the Finnish team lost 3-2 to the American team in the semifinals, but advanced to the bronze medal round against the Czech Republic on Friday. Despite suffering two losses in qualifying, Finland defeated Latvia, gold medal favorites Sweden in a penalty shootout, and faced Slovakia in the quarterfinals. Kalki had three assists in six games at the world juniors and hopes to help his team win a medal on Friday.
Edström and Sweden got off to a strong start, keeping a clean sheet through the first three games of the tournament against Latvia, Germany and Canada. They went on to win, losing only one game in penalty shootouts, and will face the United States in the gold medal game on January 5th. Edstrom has three assists in six games, including an assist on Theo Lindstein’s goal against the Czech Republic. They will tie the score in the semi-finals. Sweden then won 5-2 by a wide margin, giving them the chance to play the United States for the final championship on home soil.
