ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WAYNE) — After rejecting a $5.9 million bond in January to fund construction of a new jail, the Allen County Council changed its mind Wednesday and voted to approve the bond.
After initially voting 3-4 against the bond in January, the Allen County Council voted 4-3 to approve the bond.
On Tuesday, Allen County Council Vice Chairman Paul Lageman told WANE 15 he was confident the Allen County Council would approve the bond Wednesday after reviewing it.
Lagemann said he believes the main reason the Allen County Council did not approve the bond the first time was due to confusion over how the bond would be used.
“For those of you who had questions about what that money is for, where it’s coming from, where it’s going to be spent, I think we’ve solved that,” Lagemann said Tuesday.
The Allen County Legislature, Allen County Board of Commissioners and Allen County Sheriff attended a status hearing Tuesday in federal court, where a judge gave all involved parties until March 4 to submit a report outlining a solution to the new county’s costs. He said that it is necessary to submit it to prison.
Chris Cloud, chief of staff for the Allen County Commission, previously said that if the Allen County Council had not approved the bond, the construction start date for the new jail would have been delayed.
Attorney Theodore Storer, a member of the Allen County Commission’s representative team, said Tuesday that there is still a chance that construction could start in late spring, and the jail’s original completion date was April 2027.
