University of Houston-Victoria graduate Lauren Jones is making the leap as a sales executive with a path to owning her own business one day.
Jones, a Sugar Land resident, graduated from UHV in December 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. In her current role, Jones is a sales executive for City Wide Facility Solutions, where she works to sell cleaning and facility maintenance services to a variety of industries around the world. “I loved the atmosphere at UHV, especially the professors, all of whom were very personable,” Jones said. “I loved all the students and friends I made along the way and how everything at UHV gave me a more personal experience.”
For the past two years, she said, she has successfully managed accounts for day care centers, hospitals and property management companies. She officially transferred to UHV in 2013 after she completed her foundation course at Wharton Junior College. She decided to transfer to UHV after carefully choosing a college that fit her lifestyle, personality and aspirations, she said.
“We are extremely proud to hear from our esteemed alumni who went on to pursue their passions,” said Rhiannon Smith, assistant dean for administration and student services in the UHV College of Business. Her success strengthens our commitment to producing innovative thinkers and future business leaders.”
Jones said that the most difficult subject she faced as a student was statistics. Without the support of her professors and classmates, she said, it would have been impossible for her to complete the course and pass on the first try.
“The experience that has helped me throughout my business career is learning all the common practices and principles of being successful in the business world. My business classes helped me in exactly that regard.” Jones said. “I currently work in an out-of-home sales job. There are ups and downs in my role, but I stay motivated and overcome all the unknowns with a positive attitude. The way I look at it, there are a lot of “no”s, but there are also a lot of “yes.” “No” means you are satisfied with the service you are receiving. “Yes” means that I would like to hear more about what you have to offer and what I can suggest to help my company grow even further than it currently does. From there, if you can effectively communicate and build professional customer relationships about how you can help their company with what you’re selling, you’ll win. ”
As an adult, she was inspired to pursue business by watching her uncle succeed at a cybersecurity company. Jones said she carried that inspiration with her from elementary school all the way through high school graduation. During her childhood, she said, one of her first business ideas that came to her was to start her own nursery school. Now, she dreams of starting her own management company, Jones said.
“I hope to follow in his footsteps and start my own business one day,” Jones said.
