About 40,000 people came to watch hundreds of professional skiers race in Golden Valley last weekend.
For the first time in more than 20 years, the 2024 COOP FIS Cross Country World Cup was held in the United States. And it happened in our backyard, Theodore Worth Park.
American skiers showed great performance. Gus Schumacher won his first World Cup victory in the Nordic 10km race. On the women’s side, Jessie Diggins from Minnesota took third place in the 10K race.
Crowds of people and volunteers will be cheering on the World Cup skiers.
Claire Wilson, executive director of the Loppet Foundation, said it had been a “magical” weekend. Part of that, she said, is likely due to Loppet’s story as a nonprofit, which got people excited. Another piece was Hometown Connection.
“People were hungry to see Jesse Diggins ski in front of his friends and family. Watch the U.S. ski team perform better this year than any other year in World Cup racing history. “I was able to do that,” Wilson said. “All the stars aligned.”
Add to that the unusual winter weather, and Wilson said it was a miracle this event happened.
The event was held free of charge. Wilson said people from all 50 states and 21 countries traveled to the Twin Cities to watch the games, although the economic impact is still unknown.
