The Aquidneck Land Trust is currently accepting applications for the Merit Neighborhood Fund, which supports small parks, community gardens, and other natural spaces on Aquidneck Island.
Established in 1999, the fund is named for the late Peter Merritt, chairman emeritus of the Aquidneck Land Trust. The Merit Neighborhood Fund awards grants of up to $2,500 for each project it funds. These projects are selected for their potential to strengthen community identity and character, and promote land conservation and stewardship through community volunteerism.
The 2023 grant cycle will support Aquidneck Community Table, Butts Fort Hill Walking Path, Clean Ocean Access, God’s Community Garden, Emmanuel Church, Fab Newport, Four Hearts Foundation, James L. Maher Center, Newport Tree Conservancy, Newport Springs Leadership Committee, Norman Bird Sanctuary and Portsmouth Dog Park.
“The Merit Neighborhood Fund is a great program,” said Executive Director Terry Sullivan. “This provides Akidonek Land Trust an opportunity to support community-based efforts to protect and enhance small green spaces in our neighborhoods. By giving these projects a little love in the form of small grants , allowing people to connect with the land around them and beautifying their communities for years to come.”
