STONINGTON — A local organization with more than a century of philanthropy has begun accepting applications from New London County residents for zero-interest student loans and scholarships for the upcoming year.
“As a non-profit foundation, our goal has remained the same for the past 107 years: To help New London County students invest in their future through an interest-free loan program for colleges, trade schools, and vocational schools. “We continue to support them, not only with certifications/licenses, but also with awards that we offer to high school students,” Foundation Director Stacey Haskell said Friday.
The Eugene Atwood Fund was founded in 1916 by the former owner of the Atwood Machine Company in Stonington Borough, and as part of its mission to “support hard-working young men and women who are deserving of high incomes,” the Eugene Atwood Fund provides grants starting at $250 to students. On January 1, the foundation began accepting applications for its interest-free loan program for universities. The application period ends on February 28th and will reopen in January next year.
The fund also accepts applications for the Eugene Atwood Award, which recognizes academic achievement, and the Eugene Atwood Innovation Award, which provides funding for the purchase of tools and equipment for students pursuing careers in industry.
High school principals can nominate students for the Eugene Atwood Award. Students applying for the Innovation Award may nominate themselves with the recommendation of their high school principal. All students eligible for the award must also write an essay.
Applications for the Trade/Technical School and Certification/License Interest-Free Loan Program will be accepted on a rolling basis and will close as soon as all allocated funds for the year are paid or after February 28, 2024. The program will reopen for him to apply in May.
Available funds vary from year to year, but in spring 2023, the fund will receive $78,000 in interest-free loans, $22,750 in Eugene Atwood Awards and $12,862 in Eugene Atwood Innovation Awards, Haskell said. The student award amounted to $35,612, including US dollars.
