The Covington City Council will ask residents to vote in favor of a 0.2% sales tax increase this August to fund transportation improvements. If passed, the Covington City Council would eliminate the $20 vehicle tax and no sales tax increase would go into effect until the vehicle tax is repealed.
Individuals interested in writing for and against the proposed sales tax increase on the voter pamphlet should submit an application by Monday, March 25th at 5:00 p.m.

Information about the proposed ballot measure: www.covingtonwa.gov/ballotmeasure
The proposed increase, which would only apply to transportation, would increase Covington’s sales tax rate from 8.8% to 9%, or $2 for every $1,000 of taxable purchases (approximately $18.78 per year for a typical household). That way, everyone who shops in Covington, including non-residents, would contribute to the street maintenance fund, unlike the car tab fees that only Covington residents pay.
The Covington City Council will be responsible for appointing a committee to prepare a pamphlet statement of voters supporting or opposing the ballot measure. The commissions would be required to submit statements to the King County Elections Department, and each commission would submit objections and prepare rebuttals. These statements will be printed in the voter brochure along with the ballot title and explanatory text.
A maximum of three people will be appointed to each committee. Questions or comments about this process should be directed to Covington City Clerk Krista Bates at (253) 480-2400 or kbates@covingtonwa.gov. The Covington City Council will review the application at its regular City Council meeting on April 9.
