Bethune-Cookman University receives $1.4 million in endowment

Donations will be used to renovate two athletic stadiums.
DAYTONA BEACH, FL (March 22, 2024) – Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) today announced a generous gift of $1.4 million from local entrepreneur and philanthropist L. Gail Rumeland. This donation will be used to renovate his two buildings on campus known as the L. Gayle Lemeland Academic Multiplex and his L. Gayle Lemeland Football His Complex.
“Mr. Rumeland’s generosity and commitment to advancing education in Florida cannot be overstated,” said Dr. William Berry, B-CU’s acting provost and provost. “He has been a friend of the university for many years and we are extremely grateful for his kindness and investment in ensuring our students have access to the best facilities possible.”
Mr. Rumerand is CEO of Stonewood Holdings, which he majority-owns and is the parent company of the Stonewood Grill & Tavern and Peach Valley Cafe chains. Bethune Cookman, a highly regarded businesswoman in Daytona Beach, is no stranger. He previously donated funds to his B-CU to help L. Gale build his Lummeland School of Nursing, which includes offices, classrooms, a simulation lab, and an auditorium. This school he opened in 2007.
“When I got the call from Coach Alvin Wyatt, I had to find time to listen to him. And I came out and learned a lot of good things about what’s going on at this great university.” said Rumerand at today’s signing. “When you’re there [are] Every organization, whether it’s a university or a business organization, has problems, and there’s a lot of press about them. But even as things begin to turn around due to the hard work of the current leadership and management team of this great university, there is little publicity. When I learned what was going on behind the scenes and all the improvements and efforts that went into it, I just felt like I needed to do something! ”
“The entire B-CU community is grateful for L. Gail Lemeland’s support,” said B-CU Board of Trustees Chairman Belvin Perry Jr. “This transformative gift will benefit current and future students and is a testament to the enduring values and legacy of our founder, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune.”
“Today is a day of change for Bethune-Cookman University and B-CU Athletics,” said Athletic Director Reggie Theus. “These types of contributions allow us to directly improve the quality of the student-athlete experience at Bethune-Cookman University and allow us to continue developing champions on the field and in the classroom here in Daytona Beach.”
The L. Gayle Rumeland Multiplex and the L. Gayle Rumeland Football Complex will be used for academic support, conference and office space, recruiting, sports locker rooms and other similar purposes to support student-athletes.
