After weeks of campaign finance failures, there’s a new addition to Delaware’s gubernatorial race, Bethany Hall-Long, Lt. Governor.
The Hall-Long campaign announced two senior staff changes this week: Donnie Johnson as campaign manager and Sidney Diewald as finance director.
Hall-Long expressed confidence in the appointment in a news release Wednesday.
“They know what it takes to win tough races,” she said. “With 25 years of combined experience in elections and worker organizing, this dynamic team is well-equipped to lead the way and ensure victory.”
The lieutenant governor’s campaign finance problems came to light shortly after he announced his candidacy for Delaware governorship in September.
Internal audit: Lt. Gov. Hall Long improperly reported more than $300,000 in campaign-related expenses, according to filings.
The campaign conducted an internal audit to determine the extent of the problem, leading to staff departures and a change in campaign treasurer.
Cheryl Webb, then a resident of Dover, was elected treasurer in October to replace Alison Murray.

Murray, a partner at CFO Compliance, a firm that works with Democratic candidates and specializes in “state and local candidate compliance,” replaces Hall Long’s husband, Dana Long. He had held the position since May.
Hall-Long’s new campaign manager
Hall-Long’s campaign said Johnson has more than 16 years of experience in election administration, government relations and labor union leadership.
He has participated in “multiple presidential and U.S. Senate campaigns” and “contributed to Democratic state parties across the country,” his campaign said.
As a union organizer, he has worked with a variety of organizations, including the National Education Association, SEIU, and Ohio’s public sector unions. He has also worked on several “notable” campaigns, including Obama for America, Biden for President, and Sherrod Brown for the U.S. Senate and multiple state Democrats.
Finance director shares the story behind ‘extensive’ funding
Mr. Diewald last served as finance director for Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee’s campaign.
She also works on local and statewide elections, including fundraising for New York City Mayoral Candidate Maya Wiley, New York State Sen. Tim Kennedy, and Ulster County Executive (now U.S. Rep.) Pat Ryan. He has an extensive fundraising background.
