The Virginia Black History Museum and Cultural Center (BHMVA) is one of 14 organizations selected to receive a grant from the Virginia Museum of History and Culture (VMHC) Federal History Fund.
BHMVA was generously awarded $60,000. VMHC partners with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR) to award grants to historical organizations and projects across Virginia through the Commonwealth Historical Fund. Important considerations for grants include the importance of the project and resources, community and federal impact, focus on historically underrepresented topics and communities, and the need for funding and urgency of the project. There are several selection criteria. .
One of the largest initiatives of its kind, the Commonwealth History Fund will award up to $2 million over the first five years. In 2023, VMHC awarded her $401,206 to historical organizations.
Funds can be used for a variety of purposes, including preservation, publication, artifact acquisition, research, artifact preservation, and educational programs. Eligible organizations include Virginia nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and state-recognized Virginia Indian tribes. This fund is made possible through the generosity of Dominion Energy and others.

The museum will use a Federal Historical Fund grant to help restore the museum grounds at 00 Clay St.
