This month, Nonstop Local is partnering with the Billings Clinic to collect donations for the Piggy Bank Fund.
The Piggy Bank Fund covers the costs of pediatric patients receiving care at the Billings Clinic by providing financial assistance for utilities, rent, travel, and other needs.
Recently we had the opportunity to speak with one of these families and share their experience.
Becky Herzog describes the journey she and her family went through to address the medical needs of her daughter Remy.
We learned about Remy’s disability – she was born in St. V. Three hours after her birth she became jaundiced. The best way I can describe it is that she was a mustard color even though she was a young baby.
She was admitted to the NICU 20 minutes later…where a blood exchange was performed at 12 hours of age…
When she was 3 months old, I took her to an appointment. Because she was really jaundiced and couldn’t keep her head up. Her hemoglobin was 3.3. And we fled for our lives to Salt Lake at 10:40.
A month later, I was diagnosed with pyruvate kinase deficiency…I’ve been coming to the hospital every 3-4 weeks since then.
Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency is an enzyme mutation, and it was in her DNA – her father is a carrier – that she had no idea about…
The best way I can explain it is that her cells are Bali cells. So when you drop paint on her floor, she sees it splatter, but it’s her normal blood cells.
So, on average, normal, healthy blood cells last 120 days. Her blood cells will probably last her 60 days.
Her blood transfusions cost $2,000 each. Her chelation medication costs her $2,000 per box and she has three boxes of hers. She’s in a clinical trial for that, and once her drug trial is over… I think the cheapest price was $25,000 a month.
We have been to Arizona 17 times since last year for medical trials.
We are trying to stay in Billings because we want to be near the Billings Clinic, but we know there are different hubs, but each hub doesn’t have a doctor.
So it’s hard to imagine leaving the hospital because everything is so expensive.
The piggy bank fund helped us out a lot when we took a flight to Denver at 6 o’clock. They just dropped us off in Denver. When he came back with the receipt, he gave me the gas money. The next day they drove up. Yes, Remy had just had emergency surgery on his first day to remove gallstones. The next day, she underwent surgery to remove her gallbladder. There were no doctors in Billings who could perform either cholecystectomy.
…We’re not talking…A lot of people in Billings don’t know our story – because…we don’t want to feel like the “poor people.” We’re pretty healthy and pretty happy. And we don’t want her disability to feel negative.
Becky finished speaking, overcome with emotion.
