Continuing this month, Nonstop Local is partnering with Billings Clinic to collect donations for the Piggy Bank Fund.
The Piggy Bank Fund covers the costs of pediatric patients receiving care at the Billings Clinic by providing financial assistance for utilities, rent, travel, and other needs.
The Milligan family recently sat down with us to share their story. Daniel and Melissa Milligan talk about the journey their family went through to care for their young son, Anakin.
“Anakin’s illness is Menkes disease, a copper deficiency.said Anakin’s father. Daniel Milligan. “Yes, it’s a really rare disease. Part of the challenge, one of which is that we’re paying out of pocket for him to fly to Columbus, Ohio, for a drug trial he’s participating in to get copper into his body. That’s it.”
“The first few months after birth were fine. I had jaundice, but that was it. We didn’t notice anything wrong with him, but” said Anakin’s mother, Melissa Milligan. “I think it was the beginning of November when he had his first seizure. He just kept having seizures.
Finally, on December 16th, I came home from work to find him having a severe seizure. I took him to the hospital and at that time they released him to Salt Lake City. He spent a month there and was diagnosed then.
They basically told us to say goodbye to him. And that was in December 2022. We were planning how to bring him home.”
Daniel explains how the Piggy Bank Fund helped his family.
“They started him on a copper trip drip the day before Christmas and then by Christmas he started recovering from it. Since we are a two-income family, a piggy bank fund helps alleviate the anxiety of whether or not we can afford to pay our bills. It just costs more. So it’s definitely important to get things done in a place that doesn’t stress you out.” said Daniel.
“We would like to thank everyone for their cooperation. Our care team is amazing. They help them go beyond that. When we call, they answer the phone. A normal child would treat something as trivial as a big problem. They are all there to help us. They have never complained. Quitting my job is a huge burden when I know I can quit and no one will judge me for it.”
“I mean, we can travel, so we still have him,” said Melissa.
