Nationwide – by Pessimism and Hope: A Study of the Economic Situation and Aspirations of Black Americans According to a report by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Research, 75 percent of Black Americans could not cope with an unexpected expense of $1,000. Ida Birdhill sold her downtown Detroit home. Housing, cars, retirement benefits. Ida believes that economic stability comes from increased income and a positive mindset. Nearly four years later, having lived in self-imposed poverty, she has trained more than 100 people into technical careers and achieved her goal of becoming wealthy again.
