At just 11 years old, Will Friedle’s grief introduced his sons to a whole new world.

As a young actor, Friedl traveled three hours by bus from his hometown of Avon, Conn., to New York City to audition for the role. “When I tell people my story, they think I’m lying or that my parents had serious problems,” he recalled. “When I got off at the Port Authority, most of the time the manager came to pick me up. And I was walking down the street at 11 years old…I started smoking at a very young age. Please buy.”

He went on to explain how he purchased pornographic magazines to resell to friends. At a hefty price, of course. “I knew I could sell it to my friends in Connecticut for a lot more money,” he says. “I stopped by the kiosk and they looked at me and said, ‘Well, you’re 11 years old, so of course there’s cigarettes and porn in here,'” he joked.
But Friedl’s sordid childhood story doesn’t always pan out. “I’m talking to my parents about these things now, and they’re retroactively regretting that this happened.”
But despite these questionable memories, Friedl insisted he cherishes his time in the Big Apple. “I liked it. [Avon] “It was a great place to grow up, but the three to four hours each week I was in New York City, I experienced more real life than I did in Avon,” he said. “And it was a great way to see the world.”
