A milky-white sea monster sculpture described as a “unique algae-eating cow that emerged from the depths of the Saguenay Fjord” was featured at this year’s World Snow Sculpture Championship, which was held Wednesday through Saturday at Lowell Park in downtown Stillwater. won the championship.
A three-woman team from Quebec called the Fjord Witches (Fanny Faye Tremblay Girard, Joel Gagnon, and Marie-Claude Paris Tanguay) won the $4,000 prize.
They beat out 11 other teams to take top honors with their milky white sea monster sculpture titled “FJCOWRD, la vachoune de mer.” The sculpture’s “salted heavy cream is the secret ingredient for making North America’s best poetic Aurora-flavored cheese,” according to the team’s description on the event’s website.
The sculptors took 64 hours to carve the piece from a 10 x 10 x 10 foot block. Spectators were able to observe the entire process, visit the teams, and vote for their favorite team. The sculpture that received the most votes from the audience, “Poc Ta Poc: Ball Game” by Mexico’s Team Colima, won the People’s Choice Award and $1,000.
Second place went to Team Izmit of Turkey, and third place went to Team North Dakota. They each won $2,000 and he $1,000.
