Approximately 60 students and supporters attended the event hosted by the UGA Entrepreneurship Program in Studio 225.
Detail Dawgs is an Athens-based car detailing company owned by senior financial magnate Jack TerHaar. His pitch focused on the company’s customer service skills and top quality work.
Telhaar said he prepared by watching old winning pitches and used storytelling to attract the audience.
“There are actually two qualifications (to win),” said judge Justin Earnest, a UGA graduate with a background in finance and entrepreneurship. “Is the business viable and can it scale? Then his second question is, what will he spend the $10,000 on? Will the $10,000 have a significant impact on his business plan in the long run?”
Details Dawgs’ plan for the $10,000 prize is to expand into more cities and new markets, purchase new equipment, develop partnerships with commercial dealers, and promote. This comprehensive plan is part of the reason they won first place, Ernest said.
“We need advertising dollars to get our name out there. We also need to invest in channels that allow us to work more efficiently and take on more work,” Terhaar said. .
The other three judges included Cam Frank, a former UGA student and wardrobe stylist to musicians; Iv Culp, CEO of textile company Culp Inc. and Robert Bearden, resident entrepreneur at Terry College.
Sisterhood of the Traveling 20s took second place with a pitch by junior journalism major Kelsey Pearson. This Instagram-based business plans trips for women in their 20s, with an emphasis on safety and reasonable prices.
“You have to meet[customers]where they spend most of their time,” Pearson says.
Customers are discovered through promotional posts and often sign up for trips through DMs.
10 students gave presentations. Each person had 5 minutes to pitch and 2 minutes to ask questions from the judges.
Existing businesses such as Ox Socks fire truck rental in atlanta explained their current business and how the first place award could take their business to the next level. The likes of Sean Snelly’s His TLS and Philip Ellington’s His UpTo pitched venture ideas and detailed how awards can jump-start the process.
Mr Earnest said there was a lot of discussion during the process of selecting the winners and many of the proposals were interesting and unique ideas. The judges were impressed with the competitors who were able to show evidence of sales and audience.
The judges provided feedback to each company before announcing the winners. Atlanta Fire Truck Rental was told it needed to focus on scaling up its existing company and franchising. Culp calls the company’s owner, Tyler Meyer, a “master marketer” and believes he’s onto something really big.
