Trenton, Ontario. – Unifor blames the decision by Cascades Containerboard to close its plant here, putting more than 100 Unifor members out of work, on a lack of capital investment during good economic times.
“Sadly, this is another example of a company failing to invest when it should have, and now our members and their families are paying the price,” Unifor National President Lana Payne said. “I want to be clear that we expect companies to offer severance benefits that reflect employees’ years of dedicated service,” she said.
Unifor Local 1470 represents 116 union members at the facility and was negotiating the next collective bargaining agreement with the employer at the time of publication.
“It’s obviously a tough day for our members, but it’s also a sad day for the Trenton community as we lose one of our town’s largest employers,” Local 1470 President Jamie Mallory said. “The union will be here every step of the way to support our members through this transition and to advocate for our members at upcoming meetings to discuss the terms of closure.”
The union plans to meet with the employer in the coming days to discuss the details of the closure.
Unifor is Canada’s largest private sector union, representing 315,000 workers in every major sector of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.
