Sacred Heart Veterans Village is scheduled to break ground in June 2024 with the goal of providing housing and services to veterans.
Catholic Charities announced ARPA funding and community support for this project on Tuesday, January 16, 2023.
The project will begin in November 2023, with the Flint City Council approving $400,000 worth of ARPA funding for Catholic Charities’ Sacred Heart Veterans Village project. Construction is currently scheduled to begin in the summer of 2024.
These funds were used for the excavation and foundation work needed to prepare the land for what will become a “tiny house” village and community veterans resource center at 719 E. Moore Street in Flint.
The village will be the central hub for a larger program aimed at filling the gap in comprehensive transitional housing services available to veterans, regardless of discharge status or length of service.

This project is supported by the entire community, including Mayor Sheldon Neely and City Council members Dr. Ladell Lewis and Quincy Murphy, who have advocated for this project from the ground up.
Groundbreaking for the first phase is scheduled for June 2024, which will complete land preparation, a community veterans resource center, and the first 12 to 14 permanent tiny homes. The target completion date for the first phase is January 2025. In addition, the second phase will include an additional 12 homes and is expected to be completed by summer 2025.
The total budget is $3.5 million to complete, and there is nothing comparable anywhere in Michigan. In fact, the City Planning Commission approved changes to the city’s requirements to create opportunities for small, affordable housing units to be used to alleviate the city’s low-income housing shortage and promote homeownership. opened.
To participate in this project, Catholic Charites is accepting volunteers and accepting competitive bids for drilling and contract services.
