Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado (Alpecin Deceuninck) was forced to withdraw from round 12 of the UCI Cyclocross World Cup in Sonnhoven on Sunday due to a severe back injury.
Alvarado currently leads the overall series with solid performances in 10 of the 14 World Cup series. She chose not to compete in the sixth round in Flamanville and confirmed that she would not compete in Zonhoven.
“Today in Gülleghem I had bad back pain again,” Alvarado said. “I could barely drive in the mud and couldn’t put any force into the pedals.”
Alvarado competed in Saturday’s Hexia Cross Gülehem, which was won by Zoe Backstead. However, she was forced to quit mid-race due to her pain.
Alpecin-Deceuninck said in a post on Alvarado’s Instagram that in agreement with the medical staff and team management, it was decided not to take any risks by playing in the next day’s World Cup in Sonnhoven.
Alvarado is now looking ahead to competing in the Dutch National Championships in Hoogeveen next weekend.
“It’s a shame, but if I had been in Sonnhoven I could have taken a good step towards winning the overall World Cup. But now an osteopathic visit is more important. To fully recover from this It will take several days,” Alvarado said.
Alvarado won three rounds of the World Cup series: Dendermonde, Troyes and Namur. She currently leads the series with 312 points, followed by Lucinda Brand (Baloise Trek Lions) in second place with 237 points and third in the pack. Peters (Phoenix Deceuninck) 220 points.
The World Cup will begin on Sunday in Sonnhoven, followed by matchday 13 in Benidorm on January 21st and matchday 14 in Hoogerheide on January 28th.
