Caribbean dream: The Chanel Cultural Foundation is flying the French flag in support of multimedia artist Julien Kruse, who will represent the country at the 60th Venice Biennale.
The Chanel Cultural Fund, headed by Jana Peel, Chanel’s global head of arts and culture, described Kruse, a visual artist, video maker and poet, as an inspirational figure in contemporary art.
Born in 1986, Kruse is a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He is the first person of Caribbean descent and the first artist from a French overseas territory to represent France at the Venice Biennale, which runs from April 20th to November 24th.
His presentation as Artist of the Year took place in Martinique to highlight the region and its art scene, which is his main source of inspiration.
His work will be exhibited both inside and outside the France Pavilion, and the artist says he draws inspiration from “the imaginary world of the Caribbean, where African, Indian and European cultures meet.”
Kruse’s work also focuses on the spoken word, so “Sonic Reader,” which includes more than 70 audio works, will be shared regularly on social media and various online platforms during the Biennale.
As well as poems and text passages, the artist book also includes a series of previously unpublished image collages by Kruse.
Kruse said his installation was inspired by his childhood and the weekends he spent with his father and brother in the dense forests around Anse Clouvres. They played a game to find Martinique’s red-tailed spider.
“Looking for this spider and trying to catch a glimpse of it in the thickets of leaves on trees, sometimes it’s a chance encounter that suddenly catches your eye, sometimes it’s the trees, leaves, branches, trunks that are decomposing. ” Kruse said.
“Sometimes you think you see something but it’s not really there, and sometimes you see it, and sometimes you’re just imagining it. There’s something similar about the pavilion,” he said. added.
The artist described the installation as “a crossroads, a place where you can encounter something, including, above all, yourself.”
Mr. Peel said that stepping into the France Pavilion for the first time “will be an amazing moment. Julien is well-versed in poetry, music, film and animation. He has an incredible talent for assembling ready-made objects and has an intuitive ability to weave together cultural heritage.
“His art is driven by his scholarship as an art professor at the Paris École des Beaux-Arts. But it is also driven by his desire to travel the world and absorb everything he sees. “Flotsam washed ashore by ocean tides can rival Roshi’s work. It’s bold and exciting,” she said.
Chanel’s support of Kruset marks Chanel’s biggest moment at the Venice Biennale since Zaha Hadid designed a mobile art pavilion for the French company in 2008.
Established in 2021, the Chanel Cultural Fund aims to support creative pioneers and collaborate with international museums and institutions open to presenting art in innovative ways.
It built on the brand’s tradition of patronage and Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s famous role in supporting the arts.
