Tammy and Phil Murphy were already out the back door of the Long Branch Portuguese Club meeting hall when a longtime observer of national politics declared the day’s events “a bellwether.”
That seemed like a polite way of saying it was a proverbial punch in the face to the first lady and the governor.
Not only did Andy Kim win the Monmouth Democratic Convention by a 265-181 margin, he also won in the Murphy family’s home county.
In fact, Tammy Murphy made that very point in her speech to a packed Monmouth Democratic Party.
She said she has lived in the county for more than 20 years and has raised her children there. Additionally, she volunteers for many local charities and she is also familiar with her local 5-K races. Not only that, but once she gets to the Senate, she won’t forget that Asbury Park’s convention hall could use some financial assistance.
Her speech was certainly more energetic than others she gave during the campaign.
But I felt like she was reaching for the hometown angle a little bit. After all, we’re running for the U.S. Senate here, not county commissioners.
The first lady has previously said that women are better suited than men to fight for things like abortion rights. Today she declared that her Senate needs “more irritating moms”.
Congressman Frank Pallone spoke at the convention as a supporter of Murphy.
“I know this is a difficult choice for many of you,” the veteran lawmaker said. He gave three reasons why the convention should support Mr. Murphy.
She lives in that county.
We need more women in the Senate.
She’s a progressive.
Mr. Pallone elaborated further, saying Mr. Murphy would stand up against “special interests.”
That seemed a little ironic.
The main criticism of the first lady is that she represents special interests, a candidacy based on the political power and influence of her husband, the governor.
By the time Kim spoke to reporters, the Murphys were already gone.
“We are a campaign with momentum. We are a campaign with energy,” he said.
On this day, no one objected.
