Position summary:
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) reports to the Chancellor and has broad responsibility for finance and business operations. The CFO is responsible for the university’s financial management, including financial reporting, cash and investment management, budgeting, forecasting, auditing, tax, and financial analysis. The CFO reports directly to the President and serves as a key advisor and strategic thinking partner to the President and the executive team.
Mandatory Duties and Responsibilities
- Create and maintain a long-term financial plan. Work closely with the President and functional leaders to coordinate strategic, operational, and financial planning.
- Provides financial analysis and support to University leadership and serves as the primary advisor on financial issues and decisions affecting the University.
- Serves as a liaison with the Finance Committee, Audit Subcommittee, and Investment Committee of the Board of Directors.
- Develop your finance and accounting team by defining key roles, recruiting and retaining top talent, and providing your team with the resources to get the job done.
- Develops and implements financial policies and procedures to ensure the financial stability of the University.
- Ensure that the university’s financial internal controls are in place.
- Oversees the management of the university’s financial systems, including the general ledger.
- Oversee the preparation of financial statements and reports, including monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Manage the university’s budgeting process, including coordination with departmental leaders to ensure alignment with central budget planning.
- Manage the University’s cash flow and investments, including developing and adhering to investment policies and strategies.
- Oversee short-term or long-term borrowings.
- Oversees the university’s real estate portfolio and financial investments in land and buildings. Coordinates with the Chief Operating Officer on financial planning for the maintenance and renewal of University facilities.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations, including tax laws, accounting standards, and financial reporting requirements.
- Oversees the preparation of annual or periodic external financial audits, government audits, and other audits. Address the findings and implement any necessary changes.
- Participates in professional development to maintain current knowledge and skills in all areas of responsibility.
knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of nonprofit higher education finance, including FASB and GAAP accounting standards, nonprofit fiduciary responsibilities, and working knowledge of student income, including tuition discounts and federal Title IV financial aid.

- Strategic financial planning, analysis and modeling skills
- Complex analytical thinking skills
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical financial concepts and information to a general audience.
- Knowledge of financial management software and systems.
- Skills in creating financial policies and procedures that are clear, easy to use, and promote a strong control environment.
- Entrepreneurial spirit and ability to take responsibility for contributing to the growth of SFBU.
- Cultural competency and ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders in diverse communities.
minimum qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field.
- 10+ years of experience in financial management in a higher education environment.
- 5+ years of experience in a senior management or executive role.
- Technical proficiency with Microsoft Office Professional Suite, Google Mail and Calendar programs.
Desired qualifications
- Master’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field.
- CPA or CMA certification.
- Senior financial management experience in a higher education environment.
- Department development experience
- Experience with Salesforce and Sage remains intact
Salary range: $240,000 – $280,000
